The Thuringian Open Air Museum Hohenfelden ( http://www.freilichtmuseum-hohenfelden.de/) was founded in 1979. It is a cultural, educational and recreational facility of national importance in the sponsorship of the Weimarer Land district. The open-air museum is a place where evidence of bygone worlds is preserved, researched and presented. In contrast to other ethnological and cultural history museums, this takes place in an authentic, lively and historical environment.
The Thuringian Open-Air Museum has two locations: In the listed village of Hohenfelden, historical buildings, e.g. the school or the former rectory, have been preserved in their original location. On the other hand, historical rural buildings from various Thuringian villages have been and are being moved to the main location of the museum, the “Am Eichenberg” museum area.
The buildings of the museum are unique evidence of rural Thuringian building culture. The implementation will save them from demolition, restore them in the museum and furnish them true to the original. The open-air museum also includes the area in which the buildings once stood: gardens with historic fruit and vegetable varieties, old breeds of farm animals, paths and squares as well as traditionally cultivated fields.
